Steve, Lindsay’s boyfriend at the time, knew that Pure Barre was her happy place and made an effort to support her by taking class. On this particular day though, she couldn’t have been more surprised during the final stretch of class!
I started teaching at Pure Barre Buffalo since the day the studio opened in November 2013. The studio and the community have truly become my happy place. It was not even a year later when Steve and I met (and I quickly corrected his pronunciation of “bar-ay”). Despite his goofy pronunciation, he made every effort to support me. Over the next year and a half, he came to a handful of my “bar-ay” classes and events.
Fast forward a bit. One day, Steve said his older brother wanted to try a class. I didn’t think much of it, and told him I was teaching two Saturday morning classes one right after the other and they were welcome to come to either.
Both Steve and his brother showed up for class, and I helped them get situated. As I started teaching, the class felt like any of my other classes–high energy with a great community. But right before our final stretch, Steve got off his mat and waved me over to the middle of the room. He grabbed my hand and he was shaking. I thought he needed my help or was going to pass out because it was a hard class! With the music playing, Steve started to say, “This is one of your happiest places in the world, and I love you with all of my heart.” He got down on one knee and held out a beautiful ring and asked, “Will you marry me?”
Stunned, I was out of breath. As the lights were out, no one in class noticed what was going on, so I cued the next move before I even said “Yes!” Finally, his brother let out a, “Woooo!” Everyone realized what was happening and started clapping. I turned the lights on and looked to the lobby to see that he had invited both of our families!
It was an amazing day at one of my favorite places. And the best part is, every time I teach or take a class, I’m in the very spot where it all happened.
