How to Make the Most Out of a Group Fitness Class

If you’ve made the decision to join a group fitness class, you’ve started a fantastic journey towards health and happiness! Just like any journey, though, it won’t always be easy. The people who are most successful in a group fitness class are the people who really put their all into it- and that means emotionally and mentally as well as just physically. By keeping these few simple tips in mind, though, you can definitely make the most out of your class and quickly start realizing your fitness goals!

  1. Bring a Friend!

If possible, try to get a friend to sign up for the class with you. Going into the class with an established relationship will help your confidence tremendously and give you an accountability partner; someone who will help keep you on track while you help them do the same. Don’t get cliquey, though! Make sure you and your friend are just as friendly to everyone else in the class. This will help on those nights when your friend can’t make it- you’ll feel much better about going at it alone!

  1. Don’t Compare Yourself to Others!

The point of a group fitness class is to support your classmates while you all sweat together, not to constantly feel bad about yourself because you’re not on the same level as Heather up front. This is a really hard habit to break, but once you figure out how to focus on your individual progress and feel proud of yourself for your hard work, you’ll enjoy the class a lot more. Are you envious of the way Heather’s arms look? Don’t feel bad- go compliment her and tell her how excited you are to be in the class with her! Chances are you’ll make a new friend!

  1. Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Help!

The biggest mistake that many beginners make when starting a group fitness class is thinking that they’re the only beginners. This may make them nervous to ask for help due to fear of standing out as a newbie. Don’t fall for it! In order to make the most out of the class, you need to be sure that you’re doing everything properly. If a certain position is causing you pain, ask what else you can do in order to work up to that position instead of just resigning yourself to failure.

  1. Don’t Give Up!

A lot of people tend to go to one class and then give up immediately afterwards. Maybe the workout felt too hard; maybe they didn’t see instant results; maybe they spent the whole time comparing themselves to everyone else… no matter the reason, though, you should never give up! After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day, right? The fact of the matter is that the first workout will be hard, and you won’t see instant results. That’s how it’s supposed to be! The sense of satisfaction that comes with returning to the class week after week will boost your confidence just as much as it will when you see your fitness goals come to fruition. If it was easy, everyone would do it, right? Remember that you’re not everyone- you’re a warrior! You made a commitment to take this class, now stick to it!

With that being said, not every class is right for every person. But that does not give you an excuse to simply quit, though. If something just isn’t working even though you’ve been attending the class every week, start looking for the next class to take until you find the one that’s right for you.
