PB: What is one piece of advice you would give to someone who is new to Pure Barre?
Shalisa: The best way to start your Pure Barre journey is with a friend! Any new workout can be scary, so bringing a friend along can help you get through that first class with a little less stress. They can also help you stick with your workouts by keeping you accountable. Plan your Pure Barre classes together at the beginning of each week and you’ll be less likely to bail when you know your friend is counting on you!
PB: What’s your favorite post work out way to refuel?
Shalisa: I’m always on the go and always hungry after class, so my post workout snacks have to be portable! A mix of protein and carbs is a great way to refuel after any workout, so I opt for hard boiled eggs and a Lara bar. The protein helps to build muscle, while the carbs help to replenish energy so I can get on with my day!
PB: What’s your favorite part of class or move?
Shalisa: This can change from day to day (depending on how sore I am), but I have always loved seat work the most. When I started Pure Barre, it was definitely the area that I hoped to see results in, and I was so excited when I began to see them! It’s a section where I can just close my eyes and let the music push me through. I also love that I can feel exactly where the work is and focus on targeting right where I want to work each class.
PB: How do you challenge yourself to work deeper in class?
Shalisa: My favorite thing about Pure Barre is that after 6 years, I still feel challenged each time I step into the studio. The work is constantly changing and my body is constantly sore! Lately, I’ve been working deeper by pushing myself to do something different in each class. I think about the little changes to make each position work deeper, whether its a slight weight shift, creating more resistance, or focusing on working from the deepest part of the muscle. As a teacher and trainer, I find that my best cues come from the things that I learn and feel in my own body when I take class. When these tiny changes work for me, my goal is to pass them on to my clients and help other teachers do the same!
PB: What motivates you to come to class?
Shalisa: The energy, the community and the results! The number of things that keep me coming back is infinite, but at the core of it all Pure Barre is an amazing workout that creates long lasting results. Nothing has changed my body the way that Pure Barre has, and no other workout has kept me as challenged and motivated. When I can’t make it to class, I miss the burn and the strength that I feel after I’m done. I can see myself doing Pure Barre for as long as I’m able!
PB: Who’s your favorite artist to work out to?
Shalisa: Kelly Clarkson! Her songs are always so motivating, positive and fun. You can definitely catch me singing along when “People Like Us” comes on in class.
PB: What part of class is the most challenging for you?
Shalisa: I have a serious love/hate relationship with thigh work. The results are amazing, but its always the section where I feel the biggest burn and shake the most. Even the simplest positions never get easy! I always breathe a little sigh of relief once we make it to the thigh stretch.
