Is Your Post-Workout Routine Ruining Your Skin?

With summer around the corner, we’re all putting in extra gym time to keep fitness in check. Working up a sweat is great for the mind and body – but what we may not realize is that our post-workout routine often upsets the skin’s pH balance. Sweat from workouts lowers pH and can cause breakouts unless skin is cleansed quickly, and scrubbing or shaving too heavily (as we often do) can further irritate the skin barrier. This compromises our skin’s ability to keep moisture in and pollutants out. Fortunately, a few simple changes to your daily routine can keep athletic skin clear, hydrated and balanced. It’s doesn’t have to be complicated!Pure-Barre-2014Conference-1053

Try to incorporate these tips into your daily routine to keep skin healthy:

  • Skip Soap & Hot Water. While these two sound like shower essentials, scathing hot water mixed with harsh soaps or scrubs can strip your skin of its essential oils, leaving it tight, dry and itchy. Instead, opt for a soap-free milky wash and a warm shower to thoroughly clean and help the skin maintain moisture, without causing irritation.
  • Choose Multi-Tasking Shower Basics. No-fuss, multi-tasking products are key for fast post-workout showers. To speed up you shower routine, try stocking your shower and gym bag with an easy 2-in-1 face & body wash that will provide a gentle, deep cleansing of the pores while naturally conditioning the skin.
  • Follow the 10 Minute Rule. A hot bath may soothe muscles after a long workout, but the hot water strips the skin of lipids, preventing it from retaining moisture (and 30 percent of us already have an inherited tendency for dry skin!). Try to keep showers to 10 minutes or less to minimize moisture loss, and if you’re indulging, always help skin recover by using a body lotion within three minutes of hopping out of the tub.
  • Don’t Skip a Facial Moisturizer. Skin on the face is more delicate than skin elsewhere on the body, so it’s important to moisturize – Even if you have oil-prone skin. I recommend using a non-comedogenic moisturizer, which will give skin the hydration it needs without clogging pores. Your skin will really thank you, especially if you’re subjecting it to harsh workouts!
