Pure Fuel: Watermelon Mocktail or Cocktail? You Choose!

Watermelon CutieYou’ve heard it before, but hydration truly is key to staying energized and happy throughout these dog days of summer. In case you need convincing, staying hydrated:

  • makes your skin glow
  • wards off headaches
  • energizes you, mind and body
  • controls appetite
  • boosts happiness

After all, about 70% of your body is pure water. But that doesn’t mean fulfilling your 64 ounce quota has to be a snooze fest. Sure, drink 8 or more glasses of water throughout the day if that’s your thing. But, if it’s not, don’t dull your sparkle and power through chugging mind-numbing, plain water. Instead, hydrate and keep your joie de vivre with the superfood of summer… watermelon!

Watermelon offers serious hydration. Over 91% of its makeup is pure, high quality H2O. And each juicy bite is bursting with nutrients… we’re talking significant levels of vitamins A, B6, C, antioxidants, amino acids and lycopene — LOTS of sun-damage protecting, free-radical-fighting, get-your-glow-on lycopene. Mocktail: Watermelon Lime Slushy
Recipe by: Julie Cooper
serves 1

Ingredients:

  • 1 small seedless watermelon {refrigerated}
  • 1 cup coconut water {preferably raw, I love Harmless Harvest}
  • 1 cup of ice {adding more as needed}
  • juice of 1 lime
  • sea salt

Directions: Place fruit in blender. Add the rest of the ingredients. Blend on high for about 30 seconds. Enjoy!

Fun fact: Adding mineral-rich sea salt to this slushy actually helps boost its hydrating qualities by providing thirst-quenching electrolytes. And by squeezing in some lime juice, you’re also squeezing in calcium and potassium, which, when combined with sea salt, balance pH and fluid levels in your body. Drink up!

Cocktail: Frozen Watermelon Margaritas
Recipe by: Gabrielle Terzano
serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups frozen watermelon cubes
  • 6 oz tequila ( I used 1800 silver)
  • 4 oz fresh lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons agave nectar

Directions:

  • place all the ingredients in a blender (vitamix or ninja works best)
  • blend until smooth and frothy
  • place salt on the rim of each glass
  • fill each glass and garnish with a lime
  • YUM!
