When my younger brother was on the brink of death after his ski accident, time stood still. It was one of those things that you hear of happening to other people, and never something you would imagine for anyone in your own life. I flew back home to Seattle once a month to be with my family during that time, and our family grew closer as a result of this experience. It was through those seemingly endless days in the hospital that I learned that there is nothing more important than health and family. These are truly some of the greatest riches in life. And while I knew this before, it just took a traumatizing accident for me to truly grasp it.
Two weeks before my first marathon, I broke my ankle when I was texting while walking. Maybe I should have fabricated an elaborate story to accurately reflect the two areas my bone broke, as each doctor was surprised at my cause of injury. Trust me; I was incredibly disappointed, but even more baffled that this had happened! Being out of commission physically was a clear lesson that nothing warranted that much multi-tasking. My weeks of training had gone to waste and a broken body was yet another reminder of the importance of health and balance. Any efforts to do well in life would fail without the two.
When I sit at my desk at work, or when I come across any area of stress in my life, my body responds by carrying tension in my upper back. It craves chiropractor adjustments, pressure, or different positions to relieve that tension. It’s back pain I imagined only people in their 60s should feel! I have learned through the years that my body needs to move, and that long hours in the car, heated conversations, sleep deprivation, and virtually anything can attribute to this upper back tension. But with Pure Barre, I have gone almost one year without seeing the chiropractor. It’s my happy place where I get my body moving in a fun way. Pure Barre a day keeps my chiropractor away!
Ultimately through these life lessons and discoveries, Pure Barre makes me better in life. It offers challenge and allows me to connect my body and mind, and I love that through Pure Barre:
- I’m evermore aware of my able body. It’s one I am consciously working on to get healthier and stronger. Through my brother’s accident, I learned that disability can hit anyone at any time.
- My self confidence has grown. I’ve met a number of athletic goals and challenges at Pure Barre Beverly Hills that I am proud of. I have also had my share of dull days–but come to the barre and get through thigh work without coming out of the pose. It’s an immediate booster. Try it!
- I am a better version of each of the roles I am in life (friend, educator, sister, etc.) because I am happier and healthier.
- I have been inspired by others: instructors who teach with passion, clients who have turned into friends, and you who make up the Pure Barre community. I treasure your stories through words, photos, and time spent together.
I wasn’t expecting this when I started Pure Barre, nor was I looking for a workout that I would love as much, commit to as deeply, or allow me to draw so many parallels to life outside the studio. I am humbled and incredibly grateful for the conversations I have had in this position as the Pure Barre National Ambassador, and for the opportunities to share with others something I find so incredibly valuable. I’ve shared a part of my #PureBarreLife through challenges, charity events, juice cleanses, each new friend who visits Pure Barre, and I am honored to have had this chance to encourage you! Set those goals, challenge yourself, and keep tuckin’ along! I’ll always want to hear how you’re working toward a better you and how Pure Barre is shaping you!
